Contemplating Sisterlocks

I have never blogged...so here we go. I decided to start a blog on account of all the Sisterlock sisters out there. I am starting my own journey towards this hairstyle (which also seems to be a lifestyle). I have thought about locks on and off for the past 3 years. However, I have been a slave to the perm. My hair is overpermed. So much that it reacts differently now. My hair won't straighten as much as it used to. And when permed it is very weak. So..the obvious solution would be to stop perming. Right? So..I am stopping. I have not had a perm in 6 months. However, in my circular pattern I would usually be back to the perm right about now. A couple things have changed. One, i moved to the DC area (lots of black folks with locs here) and I discovered the Sisterlocks method. There are several things I like about Sisterlocks. 1. I do not have to cut my staightened ends off right away. I know they will look raggedy and I eventually will need to chop them, but that is not neccessary to start. 2. I like the size of Sisterlocks. The small locks will allow me to style my hair in a myriad of 'dos'. 3. Last but not least I like the support. I know if i have a question, someone will be there to help me out. They may be in Maryland or California, but the support is strong. I am going to grow my natural hair out a little longer and hopefully i will be scheduling my install for the late spring. I am excited about my new hairstyle. I know I will look drastically different and may not be pleased with my hair's appearance initially. I have vowed to give myself 18 months. I know I will be SL'ed and loving it by then.
I am posting some pictures of the various hairstyles I have been through: braids, cornrows, relaxer, weave. You name it, I have been there. ahhh...to be a black woman in a eurocentric standard of beauty world. Be your self curtissepearl. Let your hair do wat it do! lol.

I think you'll be surprised and amazed that you'll love your locks from day one!! You'll enjoy the feeling of knowing that you're letting yourself be free and doing something that's actually GOOD for you! I've only been locked for 4 weeks and I can't stay out of the mirror, and I'm not usually one that's big on vanity! Go for it! You'll love it!

Hi curtissepearl, I think the Sisterlock support system is amazing. I feel like I know so many members of the community. In answer to your question, my permed ends were not put into the pattern. They were left loose to be trimmed away over time.

I say go for it! Tomorrow will be 2 weeks of lockdom for me and it's shocking to me how I'm not looking back anymore! I thought I would, but I'm not. I'm not loving my hair yet, but I like it more and more with each wash. My relaxed ends were put into the pattern and maybe by summers end I'll be ready to cut them off. In whatever you choose, I wish you the best.

Curtissepearl, All I can say is that I love the freedom. Especially when the hair is fully locked. You can not beat it. It provides a lot of versatility as well. And yes there are so many people in the Sisterlock community that are so knowledgeable and ready to help. Girl you are gonna love it! And you are gonna look great. Can't wait to see your journey!

Thank you for the compliment about my puff. I read your blog about you contemplating SLs or locks in general. I say go for it! I can definitely picture you with them and I know they'll look great on you. Let us know what you decide in the end.

I feel so free and fabulous with my locks and I don't regret making the decision to have them even though it took me 2 years to decide.

DC is a great place to be when deciding to go natural. You will definitely have lots of support and see so many locked heads to remind you of where you want to go. Have you met with any consultants yet?
